COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers competed very well in a full contact scrimmage on Saturday against Graham and Tri-Village.
Overall, Covington scored five touchdowns – two in 10-play series and three on down-and-distance sequences. The Buccs only gave up two scores, both coming on 10-play series.
It was obvious the energy, enthusiasm and execution improved to a much higher level for the Buccaneers.
However, things started out horrible for Covington in the first play when Graham had the ball on offense. The Falcons scored on a long touchdown run on the first snap of the ball, which was a situation that forced the Buccaneer coaching staff to light a fire under the team due to their lackluster effort.
Fortunately the Buccs picked up their energy and only surrendered one more score the rest of the day on a pass play by Tri-Village in its 10-play series. Covington’s defense played relentless, which led to several forced fumbles and an interception.
The Buccaneers also had a great day on the offensive side of the ball despite committing some untimely penalties and dropping some passes that should have been easily caught.
On Covington’s first 10-play series against Tri-Village, the Buccaneers moved the ball to the two in just three plays. A penalty moved the ball back five yards and then a snap over quarterback Landin Cassel’s reach moved the ball back to the 20.
That was the only sequence all day Covington failed to score.
The Buccs scored twice on 10-play sequences on a pass from Landin Cassel to Day’Lynn Garrett and a touchdown run by Jordan Miller.
In the down-and-distance sequences, Covington scored on every possession and the defense didn’t allow a single score.
Jordan Miller set the tone by hauling in a pass in the flat and busting through the Tri-Village defense for a long touchdown play. In the next possession against Graham, Trenton Havenar caught a pass in the flat and powered his way to the end zone. In the final possession against Tri-Village, Landin Cassel tossed a perfect ball to Day’Lynn Garrett in the back corner of the end zone.
Outside of the initial beginning part of the scrimmage, the Covington Buccaneers showcased a significant amount of improvement. Hopefully things continue to move forward heading into the final scrimmage next Friday against Dixie.
