1949 COVINGTON BUCCANEERS

Burr Simpson left as a winner as Tom Finfrock and the Buccaneer ground game was a key reason Covington won six of eight games in 1949.

1949 Covington Buccaneers: Row 1 - Jim Ellis, Wayne Wise, John Phillips, Kent Hitchcock, Bob Johnston, Tony Brinkman, James Boehringer, Leonard Wood, Lloyd Holsapple, Carl Reck, Sr. manager. Row 2 - Burr Simpson, coach, Tom Finfrock, David Beard, Doug Alexander, Kay Kimmel, Tom Hill, Richard Ellis, Eddie Nolan, Donald Zimmerman, David Crotinger, James McConnel, Bob Crosier, David Mote, Harold Deeter, Asst. coach. With six letterman reporting to Coach Simpson for the gridiron season, high hopes for a successful season were in the air.

As it was, the season ended with a record of six wins and two defeats which is very good for a third year team.

The Buccs displayed fine defensive work in the forward line which proved very hard for other teams to penetrate. Another asset to the tam was its hard running backfield strongly supported by the reserves.

Covington opened the season with a 20-6 win over St. Johns at the friendly confines of Smith Field.

After a 25-7 loss at the hands of Eaton, the Buccs captured three straight victories over Minster 34-14, Ansonia 40-19, and Versailles 13-0.

As in the past two seasons, West Milton proved a tough challenge as the Buccs were handed their second loss of the season, 7-6.

Covington ended their 1949 campaign with its sixth victory of the season. Piqua Catholic was the victim, 18-0. This victory was bitter-sweet, however, as the only coach Covington has ever known coached his last game. Burr Simpson walked off the field that night for the last time after coaching the Buccs the past three years.

The seniors retiring for this year’s team are: Tom Finfrock, Dave Beard, Bob Crosier, Kay Kimmel, and Eddie Nolan.

The lineup for the 1949 Buccaneers is as follows: Left end – B. Cosier; left tackle – B. Collins; left guard – K. Kimmel; center – B. Frey, right guard – B. Langston; right tackle – E. Nolan; right end – D. Hemm; quarterback – G. Forsythe; left halfback – T. Finfrock; right halfback – J. Ellis; fullback – D. Beard
