COVINGTON – Friday night on the last day of the month of July and the beginning of the first day in the month of August, the Covington Buccaneers held their 20th annual Midnight Hit at Smith Field and the entire evening was exciting for the entire team.

The tradition of the Midnight Hit began in the 2007 season when legendary coach Dave Miller became the 15th head coach in the history of the program. Tyler Cates, another outstanding coach, kept the Midnight Hit tradition rolling from 2016 to 2020 and the Buccaneers’ current head coach Austin Morgan has carried on the Midnight Hit tradition since he became the 17th head coach at Covington in 2021.

What has made the Midnight Hit night so enjoyable for the majority of the Buccaneer players is due to them being able to begin full contact in preparation for the upcoming season. When the first full contact sequences happen, it is obvious how amped up the players are when they go head-to-head in matchups.

Tonight there was some light rain coming down onto the field for a short period of time, but the Buccaneers didn’t care. Plus, there were players from rival teams present watching the event. Actually, the Buccs embraced it and put forth so much enthusiasm and intensity from start to finish.

The mentality of the effort, execution and intensity was led by the talented and experienced seniors on the roster. They set the tone from the start and the younger players on the team followed their intensity. This led to so much excitement for the fans who were present.

Unfortunately, there was one Buccaneer player who suffered an injury. Hopefully it isn’t one that leads to several games missed by that talented player.

Overall, this Friday night was still so much fun to watch and hopefully it set the tone for more success throughout the rest of the season.
