Emerging victorious from their final game of the season, an 18-0 win over Jefferson, the Covington Buccaneers football team clinched the championship of the Little Buckeye League after a three year absence from the league.

The road to the title wasn’t easy as Covington started off the season with a 14-6 loss to Tipp City. It was the Buccaneers’ first defeat since the final week of the 1959 season and only their second loss in the last 23 games.

Not use to losing, the Buccaneers took their frustrations out on rival Bradford the following week. Behind a powerful ground game and a dominating defense, Covington shut out the Railroaders by the score of 26-0.

Another shutout victory followed as Covington beat Wayne 14-0.

Four more wins came as the Buccaneers allowed a total of 20 points in wins over Carlisle, Centerville, West Alexandria, and Dixie.

Holding a 6-1 record and looking to finish the final two games strong, The Buccaneers were stunned by Germantown 22-20 for their second and final defeat of the season.

Covington regrouped to defeat Jefferson 18-0 in its final game to capture the championship and finish with a 7-2 record.

The Buccaneers were successful due to the fine coaching of Howard Allman, Frank Dunn and James Beisner. Under Coach Allman’s watchful eye, the Buccaneers scored 216 points and only surrendered 56.

The Buccaneers placed five men on the 1961 All-League Team. They were Dave Wimmer, Jerry Fessler, Larry Warner, Tom Iddings, and Kay Hunt. Wayne Ingle and Larry Wise gained honorable mention honors.
