NEW BREMEN – The Covington Buccaneers self destructed throughout the game that led to a 40-7 loss to a talented team, New Bremen.

The self destruction of the game started off in the first quarter as the Buccaneers let New Bremen have three straight possessions inside the 40 that led to three touchdowns. Plus, throughout the first quarter the Buccaneers only had five offensive plays on two possessions due to turnovers.

Covington kicked off to start the game and New Bremen returned the ball to the Buccs’ 36. A few plays later New Bremen’s quarterback Gavin Dicke scored on a 17-yard run with 8:28 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

In Covington’s first offensive possession, New Bremen intercepted a pass at the 39 on the Buccs’ second play. Covington’s defense then failed to hold off New Bremen on a fourth-and-two situation and the quarterback scored another touchdown in a run to go up 14-0 with 3:30 left in the first.

The Buccs followed up with another turnover on the ensuing possession due to a fumble on their third play. This handed the ball back to New Bremen at the 15.

New Bremen’s quarterback scored on a 13-yard run with the same running play he used in the two previous touchdown runs. This put the Buccaneers behind 20-0 with 1:26 left in the first quarter.

It appeared as though the Buccaneers were in process to get back into the game on the next possession as Landin Cassel connected with Jordan Miller on a pass that resulted into a first down. Unfortunately, the Buccs made another offensive mistake that ended the drive as they were forced to punt at the beginning of the second quarter.

Fortunately, the Buccs forced New Bremen to punt for the first time in the game and took over the ball at their own 32. But the offense wasn’t able to take advantage of the field position as they went three-and-out to punt the ball back to the Cardinals at their 40.

New Bremen drove the drive with powerful running and one passing play to set the ball up two yards from the goal line. The next running play led to a touchdown by Tommy McNaughton to push the Cardinals’ lead to 27-0 with 4:41 left in the half.

The Buccs were forced to punt again and turned the ball over to New Bremen at the 40 with 2.38 left in the half. Three plays later the Cardinals’ quarterback scored on a 51-yard run to take a 34-0 lead at the half.

In the opening possession of the second half the Buccs made a pass to Parker Hoying for a potential first down, but a penalty eliminated it. The Buccs were forced to punt and New Bremen took over the ball at the Covington 20.

Two plays later New Bremen’s running back Jacob Kelly scored on a 16-yard run to increase the Cardinal’s lead to 40-0.

The Buccaneers were able to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard run by Landin Cassel. The key play that put Covington into the scoring position was a 39-yard reception by Trenton Havenar.

Statistically, New Bremen tallied 251 total yards, but so many possessions were started on Covington’s side of the field.

The Buccaneers closed out the game with 124 total yards and had two turnovers.

Covington is now 1-1 at this point of the season and will host Graham next Friday at Smith Field.
