The 1987 Covington Buccaneers suffered a disappointing 3-7 season despite having 12 seniors on the roster.
The expectations for the 1987 Buccaneers were high considering twelve seniors and three juniors who lettered returned to the squad from a year ago.
The expectations were even higher after a 7-0 win over Bradford to open the season. The Buccs earned a spot in the state rankings and appeared to be well on their way to a successful season.
Unfortunately for the Buccs the wheels fell off the following week. Covington blew a halftime lead to Twin Valley South and fell 22-20. Arcanum then handed the Buccs an embarrassing 29-3 defeat.
Covington rebounded the following week with a thrilling 10-7 victory over Milton Union.
Looking to maintain their momentum, Covington ran into a powerful Tipp City team and was trounced 48-8.
This loss sent the Buccs into a tailspin as they scored only 14 points in dropping their next four games to Marion Local 27-7, Miami East 21-7, Springfield Catholicx 28-0, and Versailles 41-0.
Showing character, the Buccaneers closed out the season with a 6-2 win over Lehman to finish at 3-7 on the season.
Lost to graduation are twelve seniors; Heath Finfrock, Randy Hartmen, David White, Tony Iddings, Brian Looker, Ray Burton, Steve Sink, Mike Reed, Shawn Lear, Tim Fitzpatrick, Jarrod Boehringer, and Tab Brinkman.
Donnie Harrison… The class of 1988 dedicated their yearbook to Donnie Harrison who was a classmate of theirs until a tragic motorcycle accident on May 4, 1981 took Donnie’s life. Donnie, who loved football as a member of the Little Buccs, would have been a senior on the 1987 football team. Donnie had a contagious smile and was full of life. Many fond memories remain of Donnie. The Class of 1988 still thinks fondly of him and hope his memory lives forever within the minds of his classmates and friends. | READ MORE |
