COLDWATER – The Covington Buccaneers finished the 2025 season with a 5-6 record after an unfortunate 48-0 loss to a very good Coldwater football team.

Coldwater, who entered the first round of the state playoffs with a 6-4 record, was the returning state champions and the same team that defeated the Buccaneers in the state playoffs a year ago.

Covington entered the game against Coldwater with extreme excitement to find out how much progression had been made over the past year, but things didn’t materialize efficiently throughout the entire game as the Buccaneers were controlled consistently by the host Cavaliers.

Overall, Coldwater scored a touchdown on each offensive possession throughout the entire game and held the Buccaneers to just six first downs and 123 yards of offense due to a very physical and aggressive defense. What hurt the Buccaneers the most were the three turnovers committed, two on interceptions and one on a fumble inside the Cavaliers’ ten-yard line.

Covington received the opening possession of the game, but failed to convert a faked punt on a few inches on a fourth down. Coldwater then scored a few plays later to take a 7-0 lead with 8:49 left in the first quarter.

The Buccaneers then threw an interception on the next possession and Coldwater was able to take advantage by scoring another touchdown to take a 13-0 lead.

The Cavaliers put another touchdown on the scoreboard before the end of the first quarter to take a 20-0 lead and then scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to push their lead to 34-0 at the half.

The Buccaneer defense played better in the second half by putting Coldwater into several third-and-long situations. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers were able to make some huge plays to keep drives alive and scored two more touchdowns in the second half.

Covington did put together an impressive drive in the second half that put the team into a highly potential scoring position deep inside the Coldwater red zone. Unfortunately, a fumble that bounced into the end zone turned the ball over to the Cavaliers eliminated a chance for the Buccaneers to put points on the board.

This final game of the season wasn’t ideal for Covington, but the way the players have been able to overcome adversity due to several injuries has shown significant improvement over the past year. Hopefully the Buccaneers continue to put in so much hard work and effort throughout the next off-season to set themselves up for more future success.
