The Covington Buccaneers coasted to their fourth consecutive victory of the season Friday night at Smith Field where they annihilated a small and inexperienced Ansonia team 45-13 in a Tri-County League game.

By substituting freely throughout the entire game, Coach Paul Devine rested his “Big Beef”, apparently pointing for the future contests with Versailles, West Milton and Tipp City, considered to be the tough end of the CHS schedule.

The Buccaneer Blitzkrieg struck quickly as Leonard Woods took the opening kickoff on his own 25, and behind superb blocking, flashed down the right side of the gridiron to score. The conversion was good and the Buccs took command 7-0.

The Ansonia Tigers could not penetrate the Covington line and punted out of bounds on their own 49. Five plays later the Devine Dynamo was on the two-yard line from where Kenny Shefbuch skirted left end for a touchdown. Woods again converted, giving the Buccs a 14-0 advantage.

Minutes later, Bob Tobias, Covington’s talented quarterback and defensive back, intercepted a Tiger pass at midfield and raced back to the Ansonia 20. On the next play, with the game less than five minutes old, Tobias took to the air himself and caught end Ronnie Finfrock all alone in the endzone for the third tally and the Buccs led 20-0 as Woods missed his try for point after.

Ansonia then countered on a tricky double reverse, sending Deppling around right end to score from 45 yards out. Brewer’s plunge made the score 20-7.

With two minutes left in the first quarter and Covington on their own 22-yard line, Kenny Shefbuch, Buccaneer speed merchant, smashed off-tackle and rocketed through the secondary to paydirt. Woods’ conversion kick split the uprights as the period ended 27-7.

Early in the second period, the Buccs ran the count to 33-7, climaxing a 50-yard march as Woods bulled over from the two and his try for point after was blocked.

Seconds before the half ended, with Doug Diltz setting the pace, the Buccs moved to the Tiger five from where fullback Rench thundered through quard for the sixth tally. Woods’ conversion kick went wide and Covington was on the long end of a 39-7 haltime score.

After a scoreless third quarter, Ansonia staged a sustained drive of 65 yards with Deppling scoring their second touchdown from two yards out. The Tigers were offsides on their conversion attempt, keeping the score at 39-13.

With Don Martin, regular Buccaneer lineman, making an initial appearance at offensive quarterback, Covington’s final tally came after a 55-yard march as fullback Rench crashed into the endzone from the six. Tobias’ conversion kick was true and the game ended 45-13.
