The Covington Buccaneers battled for every yard, every point and every victory to come away with a 6-2 record on the season.
The 1966 Covington Buccaneers put together an outstanding season despite only having five seniors on the roster. In a shorten season due to a cancelled season finale against Northwestern, the Buccaneers posted a 6-2 record.
The two losses came against Springfield Shawnee 14-0, and Tecumseh 8-6.
The Buccaneers were led by a talented backfield consisting of quarterback Terry Hecker, and running backs Chuck Deal, Scott Thompson, and Bob Rudy.
The line play was also a strong suit of the team with seniors Ted Peacock, Tom Weer, and Mike Tower leading the way.
The Buccaneers opened the 1966 campaign with three straight wins. First, the Buccs took care of Tipp City 20-6. Rival Bradford suffered a worse defeat as the Buccaneers ran away with a 44-8 score. Geenon was more competitive, but Covington still came out on top 12-8.
After suffering back-to-back losses to Springfield Shawnee and Tecumseh, the Buccaneers ran off another three-game winning streak.
Miami East was victim number four as Covington dominated for a 36-12 win. Northeastern was also no match for the Buccaneers as they fell 30-8. Finally, Graham suffered the same fate as five other opponents as Covington took its sixth game of the season 22-6.
The final game against Northwestern scheduled for November 4th was cancelled leaving the Buccaneers’ record at 6-2 to end the season.
The senior class says goodbye to their coach, Tom Steele who was with them throughout their four years of high school. Coach Steele closed out a four-year coaching career at Covington with a 28-8 record.
A BUCCANEER ICON Ted Peacock, a senior on the 1966 football team and a 1967 Covington graduate, went on to become one of the elite coaches in the history of the program has he accumulated a 45-5 record from 1999-2002 and qualified his team for the state playoffs in each of his four seasons at the helm. The teams he coached won three conference championships outright and earned a share of another conference title. Ted is also a member of the Covington Athletic Hall of Fame due to his outstanding career in football, basketball and track.
