ARCANUM – The season opener was an unfortunate outcome for Covington as Arcanum handed the Buccaneers a disappointing 14-13 loss due to controlling the clock.
Overall, Arcanum held key advantages in offensive plays (66-51 over Covington) and total yards (246 to 213 over the Buccs). This led to the Trojans controlling the clock in key situations.
What hurt the Buccaneers the most was self inflicted miscues throughout the game. The first miscue was a bad snap on a punt attempt inside the Buccs’ ten and the ball was scooped up by Arcanum’s Robert Denniston, who ran two more yards into the end zone to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead.
The Buccaneers responded in the second quarter with a well executed drive that was capped by a three-yard touchdown pass from Landin Cassel to Trenton Havenar to tie the score at 7-7 after Filip McMaken connected on the extra point attempt.
Arcanum then put itself in another scoring position late in the second period, but Filip McMaken intercepted a pass right outside of the goal line to end the threat and send the Buccs into halftime tied 7-7.
The Buccs started off in the second half with an unfortunate injury to a key offensive and defensive lineman, senior A.J. Reyes – an injury that put the Buccaneers in a tougher situation as the offensive and defensive lines had to be adjusted.
It took a while for the Buccaneers to adjust, but Arcanum was able to take advantage by scoring a 30-yard touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead with 7:25 left in the third.
Arcanum then delivered an onside kick and recovered the ball to reclaim a possession in the middle of the field. Fortunately, the Buccaneers were able to hold off the Trojans and get the ball back with a defensive stop.
The Buccaneers then had a huge run by quarterback Landin Cassel from 66 yards away, but the touchdown was pulled away due to an inadvertent whistle blown by an official while Casssel was running clear down the sideline. This forced the Buccaneers to chew up more time, which fortunately ended with a seven-yard touchdown run by Jordan Miller.
Unfortunately, the extra point attempt went wide right to hold the Buccaneers behind 14-13.
Covington had more opportunities in the fourth quarter, but failed to execute.
The final outcome of the game was sealed by Arcanum as the Trojans controlled the clock on two time consuming possessions.
The Buccaneers start off the season with an unfortunate 0-1 record and look to regroup next Friday in the home opener against New Bremen.
