COVINGTON – In front of a packed house for the Buccaneer Homecoming, the Buccs threw a party at the expense of the visiting Arcanum Trojans.
The 40-6 thrashing of the Trojans was not only fun for the hometown fans but it also enhanced the Buccs’ reputation as the dominate team in the CCC.
The Buccs running game was in high gear, racking up 355 yards between the talented trio of Josh Burelison, Mike Cope and Boomer Schmidt.
The Buccs jumped on the Trojans early by scoring on their first possession of the night as Dusty Blythe hit sophomore sensation, Boomer Schmidt on a 15-yard pass across the middle. Boomer then bulled his way for a 41-yard touchdown to give the Buccs a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Buccs increased their lead to 21-0 by halftime on a 15-yard scoring strike from Blythe to Clint Mohler.
The second half was more of the same.
While the offense kept clicking, the Buccs defense never let Arcanum get any momentum. Each time the Trojans ventured into Buccaneer territory the defense stepped up and shut them down. Dan Burgess and Doug Apple forced key turnovers to destroy any momentum the Trojans had.
Josh Burelison racked up 150 yards rushing and Mike Cope chipped in 103 yards.
Burelison also closed out the show with a 69-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
With the game well in hand Coach Peacock gave the reserve unit a chance to display their talent.
The Buccs improve to 6-0 and 5-0 in the Cross County Conference.
Ahead of them is a three straight games on the road against some of the better teams in the area.
Next the travel to Twin Valley South, then at Ansonia before a showdown with a very solid Cedarville team.
The next three games will determine the Buccs’ chances at a playoff spot.
