2000: BUCCS HONOR PARENTS WITH WIN OVER BRADFORD

  • Post category:2000 SEASON
Dan Burgess and the rest of the seniors led the way to a 44-8 win over Bradford on “Senior Night”.

COVINGTON – How fitting it is that the Covington Buccaneers lay claim to sole possession of the Cross County Conference crown on Parent’s Night. Prior to the game the entire team honored their friend and teammate John Starry, who lost his life this past summer, by escorting John’s parents at the conclusion of the Parent’s Night ceremony.

As they have done most of the season, the Buccs jumped on their opponent early and never let up. They scored on runs of 42 and 21 yards by Mike Cope, 83 yards by Josh Reck, and 38 yards by Dan Burgess. Burgess also had a 61-yard run which set up his 1-yard dive into the end zone to start off the scoring.

Not to be outdone by the offense, the defense put points on the board also.

Late in the first quarter, Bubby Bubeck picked up a Bradford fumble and outraced everyone to the end zone for a 59-yard touchdown.

Bradford did get on the board in the fourth quarter with a long run by quarterback Jammie Colbert.

The Buccs reserves closed out the scoring with 2 seconds left in the game with a 1-yard run by Jesse Hitt.

Defensive Star, Bubby Bubeck:
With the offense getting the press clippings, the defense has been going about it’s business by holding opponents to a total of 41 points coming into tonight’s game against Bradford. One of the leaders of the defense is Senior, Bubby Bubeck. Known as the fastest player on the team, he plays a position, nose tackle, that gets little personal recognition. UNTIL TONIGHT.

Bubby was all over the field tonight on defense, including in the end zone. He scooped up a Bradford fumble and displayed his track speed with a 59-yard return for a touchdown. Later, in the third quarter, Bubby knocked down a critical third down pass to force Bradford to punt setting up another Buccs score.

Offensive Star, Dan Burgess:
Josh Burelison went down last week during the Buccs 25-0 win over Cedarville and someone had to step up tonight against Bradford. Enter Dan Burgess. With the Bradford defense paying attention to Mike Cope, Dan Burgess ran wild on the Railroaders defense. He set the tone on the Buccs first play from scrimmage with a 61-yard run to the Bradford 9. After two short gains by Cope, Burgess punched the ball in from the one to start off the scoring.

On the Buccs’ third possession, Burgess powered his way for 27 yards to set up a 21-yard run by Mike Cope. Later, in the third quarter with the score 31-0, Dan put the game out of reach with a 38-yard run.

Now, along with his strong resume at defense, Burgess has given the Buccs another weapon on offense.
