2000: A GREAT SEASON COMES TO AN END

The Buccaneers fulfilled a promise to honor fallen teammate John Starry with a great season.

TROY – Despite 41-6 loss to Marion Local Friday Night, the 2000 Covington Buccaneers can hold their heads up high because the honored their teammate John Starry the way they intended when they made a pact immediately after Starry’s unfortunate death early in the season.

The Buccs went undefeated in the regular season, won the Cross County Conference Title and were Region 24 Runner-Up. They provided the town of Covington plenty of excitement and made their fans proud.

After the painful defeat to a very good Flyers team a few of the Buccaneer Seniors stayed on the field well after most of Troy Memorial Stadium was empty. They sat in the west end zone and sobbed knowing it was their last game in a Buccaneer uniform. Their pain was evident and it made you feel for the guys who put forth so much effort to get to this point. In time the pain will subside and they will have time to reflect on what they accomplished this year.

The eight seniors, Marc Hitt, Andy Hitt, Mike Cope, Bubby Bubeck, Jeremy Robinson, Dan Burgess, Josh Reck and Doug Apple have left a legacy for their younger teammates to follow. They left their mark in Covington football history. They were a part of two CCC Championship teams, two playoff teams and a total record of 21-3 their last two years.

One loss won’t erase all they have done and the memories they have left.
