ANNA – The Covington Buccaneers traveled to Anna on Friday for a 7-on-7 non-contact scrimmage and put forth quality effort against another talented team.
“Competed really well,” praised Buccaneer coach, Austin Morgan. “Tons of guys making plays all over the place. Defense execution was high, especially for the first day. Offense took time to get going but once it did, we began to make great reads and taking what the defense gives us to make really efficient plays.”
Granted, this first scrimmage wasn’t an ideal situation as all of the Covington players were not present due to state track and previous schedules of other commitments. But, the overall effort of the Buccaneers was impressive despite some mistakes that were made. The most visual mistakes were made on some of the inaccurate passes and the dropped balls. Still, there were several great catches and intense sprinting after hauling in the balls. Plus, the short catches made by Trenton Havener and Jordan Miller led to great plays.
The most success visually was the performance of the Buccaneer defense. The Buccs hauled in around four or five interceptions and played very well in coverage, Yes, Anna is talented and made some nice plays as well, but the performance of the Buccaneer defense showcased how intense the players played from start to finish.
What set the tone for the Buccaneers were the talented seniors who have several years of experience. They verbally communicated to the younger players to help them understand situational plays.
“We have tons of players with leadership potential,” Morgan said. “Our biggest area of growing is empowering more leaders to step up within this team to help reach our full potential.”
Obviously, there is a lot of progression and improvement that needs to be made throughout the rest of the summer to set themselves up for a successful season, but at this early point the Buccaneers are heading into the right direction. Hopefully each and every player on the team puts in the time and maximum effort needed to progress at the elite level.
