MARIA STEIN – The Covington Buccaneers traveled to Maria Stein on Wednesday for 7-on-7 scrimmages against three talented teams and made a huge amount of progress from start to finish.

The three teams the Buccaneers competed against were Marion Local, Ada and Celina, which put the team into tough situations. Fortunately, the Buccaneers played well and showed so much intensity, effort and enthusiasm throughout all three contests.

In the 7-on-7 scrimmages, each team had two offensive possessions with ten plays. Most of the team coaches only allowed their quarterbacks four seconds to deliver a pass after the ball snap.

Offensively, the Buccaneers started out impressively as five out the first six passes were caught. Even though Covington didn’t score in the next four plays, the confidence was built throughout the rest of the day,

Overall, Covington scored six times with three touchdown catches by Filip McMaken and three more by Jordan Miller. The touchdowns were not the most impressive situations as the offense executed very well by moving the ball with proper execution with located passes. Only a few passes were launched long distances throughout the day and the Covington varsity only tossed one interception.

Defensively, Covington played very well from start to finish even though other teams combined to score around four or five times. The Buccaneers intercepted five passes, two by Jordan Miller and one each by Sam Helman, Filip McMaken and Cooper Turner. Also, there were so many passes broken up by the secondary and linebackers.

Granted, there were some mistakes made that led to the other teams being able to take advantage of, but the Buccs played so much better than they did in the previous 7-on-7 scrimmage a few days ago at Tri-Village. It is obvious that the Buccaneer players are buying into the philosophy of the coaching staff for the team to have success.
