NEW MADISON – Covington traveled to Tri-Village on Thursday morning for 7-on-7 scrimmages against Richmond and the host Patriots with the Buccaneers’ performance having outstanding execution on half of the plays and mistakes on as many plays.
With a loaded senior class, the Buccaneers have so many experienced players on the field and that is why the expectation for this season is extremely high. So, when there are as many mistake made in a non-contact 7-on-7 scrimmage the Buccaneers may not be happy with their performance.
Things didn’t start out well for the Buccs in the beginning of the scrimmage as they dropped so many timely passes. Fortunately, after getting refocused by the coaching staff, the Buccaneers started playing so much better midway through the scrimmages. The highlights were touchdown catches by Jordan Miller, Jonny Miller, James Kuether and Filip McMaken.
The touchdown made by Filip McMaken happened with just 20 seconds left against Tri-Village as Landin Cassel tossed a perfect pass down the middle for McMaken to make a great catch.
Another highlight for the Buccaneers was the execution of the defense after Richmond made a great play to move the ball to the four-yard line. The Buccaneers prevented Richmond from scoring on six straight plays and in the 7-on-7 scrimmage there was not a four-down situation, just a timeframe. Richmond was able to score on its seventh play inside the five-yard line, but it wasn’t a degrading play by the Buccs.
The most impressive execution the Buccaneers made throughout the scrimmages on Thursday was the timely passes made by senior quarterback Landin Cassel. He did a fairly good job of finding open receivers and made some great passes in short routes that would have led to first downs in actual games.
On defense, senior Jordan Miller and sophomore Wyatt Kerber made interceptions that prevented potential touchdowns by the two other teams.
Later in the scrimmages the Buccaneers struggled with so many dropped passes and failing to shut down the two teams defensively. This led the great Buccaneer coaching staff to try and refocus the team once again, but unfortunately the scrimmage ended too early.
The films of the scrimmages are available for the entire team and the Buccaneers will need to refocus on their effort and execution as they will travel to Marion Local for more 7-on-7 scrimmages on Wednesday, July 22nd.
