OCTOBER 26, 2012 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers concluded a record-breaking regular season with a convincing 45-13 victory over Arcanum on Friday.
In recording a 10-0 record, the Buccaneers have racked up a school record 4602 yards on the ground and scored a total of 543 points, good for second in school history behind the 1960 football team.
It all leads to Covington’s 17th state playoff appearance and 27 league championship.
“I like where we are right now with our mindset and attitude,” said Covington coach Dave Miller, who has led the Buccs to the state playoffs in each of his six seasons as head coach. “We had a good week of practice and got a lot of work in. These kids work hard.”
And that hard work was rewarded with a complete domination of Arcanum in the first half as Covington built a 38-0 lead at the break.
Senior, Troy Cron started things off with a 59-yard touchdown run on the second offensive play of the game and then broke loose from 20 yards out on the Buccs’ next possession.
After the Buccaneer defense forced a three-and-out, A.J. Ouellette hauled in the punt at the Buccaneer 35 and raced untouched down the home sideline for the score to push the lead to 20-0.
“It was critical for us to jump on them early,” Miller said. “The two big runs by Troy and then the punt return there were big plays.”
And Covington didn’t take the foot off the gas pedal as Ouellette capped the first half with three more touchdown runs from 35, 15 and five yards out.
“The conditions weren’t ideal, but we’ve seen that before,” Miller said. “The kids did what they had to do.”
With the game well in hand, Covington turned the game over to the younger kids in the second half and the Buccaneer offense didn’t miss a beat as Brandon Magee raced 38 yards for the score to push the margin to 45-0 at the end of three quarters of play.
Arcanum closed out the scoring with fourth quarter touchdown runs by Brad Byers and Parker Burhman, but the outcome was never in doubt as the rain continued to pour on Smith Field.
Which didn’t damper the mood as the clock ticket zero and Covington walked off the field with its third straight unbeaten regular season in tact.
Now it’s time to wait for the computer to spit out its numbers to determine who Covington will likely host in the opening round of the state playoffs next Saturday. As of press time, it looks like the Buccs will be hosting the Dixie Greyhounds.
