1985: BUCCS EXECUTE TO PERFECTION

  • Post category:1985 SEASON
Ty Owens had a huge game against Mechanicsburg.

COVINGTON – Covington scored every time it touched the ball in the first half en route to a 50-0 win over Mechanicsburg Friday.

Halfback Jim Stickley scored three times and fullback Rich Phillis scored twice to lead the Buccs seven touchdown, 343-yard rushing attack.

Covington coach Charlie Burgbacher was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I like the strong, aggressive defense,” Burgbacher said. “We kept the execution on the whole game.”

Covington limited Mechanicsburg’s offense to minus two yards rushing and 37 yards passing for the game.

Stickley got the Buccs on the scoreboard less than five minutes into the game on an 8-yard run. Bill Besecker kicked the extra point to give Covington a 7-0 lead.

Owens gave Covington a 14-0 lead with 1:58 left in the first quarter. He swept around left end on a 9-yard TD run. Besecker added the kick.

Covington would score three more times in the first half. Stickley crossed the goal line twice – on runs of 4 and 45 yards – while Phillis scored once on a 32-yard pass from quarterback Matt Pond. Besecker added three extra point conversions to increase the lead to 35-0.

Phillis increased the margin to 42-0 with 2:14 left in the third quarter on a 9-yard scoring jaunt. Sophomore Heath Finfrock added the final score with 43 seconds left to play on a 4-yard run. Tony Iddings ran in the two-point conversion to end the scoring.

Burgbacher found both good and bad points to the Buccs’ play.

“I was most happy with how we kept the penalties down,” Burgbacher said. “But I didn’t like the way our offense slacked off in the second half with a few interceptions. But all in all, we played an excellent game.”

Covington (6-0, 2-0) will travel to Miami East next Friday.
