1979: BUCCS ROLL OVER PARKWAY

  • Post category:1979 SEASON
Dave Tobias and the Buccaneers jumped out to a fast start in the season opener.

August 31 – PARKWAY
The Covington Buccaneers opened what they hope will be a promising season with a convincing 28-3 win over Parkway.

The Buccs did have some early uneasy moments, however, as Parkway got on the scoreboard first. Rick Waddle kicked a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter for their only points of the game.

It took Covington until 30 seconds left in the first period to get their first points of the season. Joe Schmidt broke away from the Parkway defense for a 77-yard touchdown run and after a Dave Tobias kick, the Buccs were on top 7-3 to end the first.

After a scoreless second quarter the Buccs began to roll. Quarterback Dave Tobias scored on a 38-yard run to give Covington a 14-3 lead after three periods of play.

Rick Schmidt reached the endzone twice in the final quarter, first on a 57-yard run and then on a 35-yard pass from Tobias.

Covington racked up 363 yards on the ground while holding Parkway to just 95 yards of total offense. The Buccs turned the ball over 3 times and racked up 30 yards in penalties.

Covington travels to Tipp City next Friday in non-league action.
