Oct. 5 – COVINGTON
The Lehman Cavaliers were no match for the unbeaten Covington Buccaneers as Covington rolled to a convincing 34-8 victory. The victory was extra special for the Buccs as they celebrated homecoming and their queen Sherry Holsinger.
It didn’t take the Buccs long to get rolling as quarterback, Dave Tobias connected with Greg Rench for a 63-yard touchdown pass on their first pass play of the game.
Before the first period ended, the Buccs scored again after Tobias stepped in front of a Lehman pass. Joe Schmidt scored on a 1-yard dive to give the Buccs a 14-0 lead.
Lehman’s defense stiffened in the second quarter as they held Covington in check and kept their high powered offense out of the end zone. The Cavalier offense didn’t get much done, however, and the score remained 14-0 at the half.
The Buccaneer offense got on track to start the second half. From the Lehman 32, Tobias pitched to Rick Schmidt, who stopped and fired downfield to Phil Reck for the score. Tobias then took matters into his own hands and ran in the 2-point conversion for a 22-0 lead.
On the Buccs next possession, the Buccs used a fake punt to set up another touchdown. The touchdown came on a 50-yard pass from Tobias to Joe Schmidt for a 28-0 lead.
Lehman managed to get on the scoreboard late in the third on a 26-yard pass from Brian Hemm to Steve Barhorst, but Covington came right back to put the game away. Mike Grilliot hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Scott Manson to end the scoring.
The win keeps the Buccs unbeaten at 5-0-1 and sets up a battle between the other unbeaten team in the league, Versailles next week.
