Sept 7 – TIPP CITY
Despite playing without the services of Joe Schmidt, two turnovers and 115 penalty yards, the Covington Buccaneers had their way with Tipp City for a 20-7 win.

On their opening drive of the game, the Buccs squandered a scoring opportunity inside the Tipp City 5-yard line. After driving from their own 35, the Buccs had the ball first and ten at the 5 when Rick Schmidt fumbled after being hit while he was on the way down.

Tipp failed to take advantage and gave the Buccs excellent field position at the Red Devil 32. Covington put the first points on the board a few moments later on a 1-yard dive by Dave Tobias. Tobias then converted the extra point for a 7-0 Buccaneer lead.

The Buccs would score again before halftime as Tobias and Greg Rench began to hook up. Tobias hit Rench on a 14-yard pass to begin an 86-yard scoring drive that ended with another Tobias to Rench hook-up from 40 yards out. Tobias was good on the extra point and Covington went into the locker room with a 14-0 halftime lead.

The Buccs received a huge scare midway through the third quarter as quarterback Dave Tobias limped off of the field. Tipp City appeared to gain confidence from the absence of Tobias, as they cut the Buccaneer’ lead to 14-7 on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Craig Arndts to Terry McGinnis.

Covington responded with a clock-eating drive of their own. Beginning at their own 24, the Buccs marched down the field on 15 plays before two straight penalties resulted in a 2nd and 26 situation at the Tipp City 46. A few plays later, Tobias connected with Phil Reck from 24 yards away for the final score of the game.

Covington improves to 2-0 on the young season while Tipp City drops their season opener. The Buccs head home next Friday for a match-up with heated rival Bradford.
