COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers posted their third straight victory Friday night as they clubbed Greenon 34-0, in the Mad River Valley League opener for both teams.
The Buccs jumped off to a quick lead on the opening play as left halback John Flory ran around right end 76 yards for the first of his three touchdowns of the night. Bob Rudy ran up the middle for the PAT and Covington led 8-0.
After allowing the Knights of Greenon just one series of downs, the Buccs started a drive from their own 44-yard line. Using eight plays, including a 21-yard pass from Flory to halfback Kent Thompson, the Buccs scored again on a 9-yard run by Flory, with 5:02 showing in the first period. The PAT failed and Covington led 14-0.
With 3:44 showing on the clock, Flory threw a 15-yard pass on which Kent Thompson made a great, over the shoulder running catch as he crossed the goal line. The PAT failed and the Buccs led 20-0 at halftime.
The knights defense held the Buccs scoreless in the third period, but with 11:52 showing in the final period, halfback Kent Thompson ran around left end on a reverse play for 10 yards and the touchdown. Flory ran up the middle for the PAT and the Buccs led 28-0.
Covington tallied for the final touchdown when Flory ran 33 yards for his third touchdown of the night. This was the end of the scoring as the Buccs led 34-0.
Covington had 14 first downs compared to Greenon’s 4. The Buccs gained 438 yards rushing while their defensive unit, led by tackle Tom Weer, held Greenon to 53.
In running their record to 3-0, the mighty Buccs have scored 162 points, while holding the opposition to 8. They are paced by the high-scoring trio of Kent Thompson, John Flory and Bob Rudy.
Thompson has scored 8 touchdowns and a two-point conversion for a total of 50 points. Flory has scored 8 touchdowns and four two pointers for 56 points. Rudy has tallied for three touchdowns and 4 PAT’s for 26 points.
