TIPP CITY – Covington gave fair warning they’re again a team that will bear watching in the Mad River Valley League as they scored almost at will against Tipp City Friday night in a 44-8 triumph.

The closest Tipp was able to get was just before halftime when they scored to cut Covington’s lead to 14-8.

However, Coach Tom Steele’s boys unleashed a 16-point third quarter upon the Red Devils and added another 14 points in the final stanza. The victory, opening Covington’s season, was their first in three years over Tipp.

Halfbacks John Flory and Kent Thompson figured in almost all the scoring, Flory scoring twice and throwing for another while Thompson scored three times.

Covington, who shared the MRVL last year with Springfield Shawnee, got their scoring machine going in the first quarter when Flory went over from three with only 51 second in the initial period. The run for PAT was no good, Thompson carrying.

Flory figured in the next score, hitting Thompson with a 46-yard scoring pass with 2:04 left in the first half. This time Thompson’s run for the bonus two markers was good.

Tipp posted its first score with 1:17 left on Pittinger’s two-yard plunge, and the two-point pass made the score 14-8 at intermission.

From then on it was all Covington as they generated a 30-point second half.

Tipp, early in the second half punted to Covington’s three-yard stripe and then pinned a two-yard loss on the Buccs to the one.

On the next play, Kent Thompson broke loose on a 99-yard jaunt with 9:51 left in the third quarter. Flory then added the PAT

At 4:18 Thompson was at it again, scoring his third and final TD on a four-yard run. Again, Flory ran for the extra points.

Bob Rudy got into the scoring parade late in the quarter, going 12 yards up the gut, with Tom Feeser passing to Mike McMaken for the PAT.

Flory concluded the night’s scoring, scrambling 26 yards. Flory dropped back to pass, couldn’t find an open receiver, and zig-zagged his way in.
