Sept 28 – SPRINGFIELD
The Covington Buccaneers remained unbeaten and recorded their first shutout win with a convincing 21-0 victory over Springfield Catholic Central.
All 21 Covington points came at the hands, (or feet) of quarterback Dave Tobias. Tobias scored on three short touchdown runs and converted all three extra point attempts.
The Buccs got things rolling right out of the shoot as they drove 60 yards for the score on their first possession. On the drive, Dave Tobias connected with Rick Schmidt for 15 yards, then to Greg Rench for 15 yards. Tobias finished the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Buccs a 7-0 lead.
Both teams made it difficult for the other to move the ball in the next two quarters. SCC threatened in the second quarter as they reached the Covington 34. The Tornadoes committed one of their three turnovers as they fumbled to end the only scoring threat they had in the first three quarters.
Covington’s offense came to life in the fourth quarter as Rick and Joe Schmidt began picking up chunks of yardage on the ground. Joe Schmidt led the Buccs with 65 yards on the ground against the tough SCC defense.
As the Schmidt’s heated up, the Buccs increased their lead. Tobias snuck his way into the end zone from 2-yards away to push the Covington lead to 14-0.
Trying to get back into the game, SCC committed one last mistake that led to the final points of the night. SCC quarterback Brian DeWitt was sacked and fumbled on a screen play. Covington’s Dan Westfall pounced on the loose ball setting up the third Tobias touchdown run.
Covington improves to 4-0-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Three Rivers Conference. The Buccs host Lehman next Friday.
