Sept 21 – COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers had little time to dwell on last week’s scoreless debacle against Bradford because Miami East came to town tonight to open the Three Rivers Conference schedule.
When the dust settled, the Buccs got just what they needed to make them forget last week, a 27-6 win over the Vikings.
The Buccs took control from the outset, scoring on their first drive of the game. After starting on their own 38, quarterback Dave Tobias connected with Phil Reck from 30 yards away. A few minutes later, Joe Schmidt put the Buccs up 14-0 with a 4-yard touchdown run.
Miami East got on the scoreboard in the second quarter as Mike Roddy hit Kevin McCormick for an 11-yard touchdown pass. An attempt at the two-point convcersion failed and the score remained 14-6.
Covington increased their lead prior to the end of the half as Joe Schmidt pounded his way from 3 yards out. The extra point failed and first half ended with the Buccs on top 20-6.
The Buccs put the finishing touches on the Vikings in the third. After forcing 1 of 6 Miami East turnovers, Joe Schmidt powered his way in from 10 yards out for his third score of the game. Dave Tobias put the final points on the board with the extra point and the Buccs walked off the field 27-6 winner.
Next Covington travel to Springfield for a showdown with Springfield Catholic.
