COVINGTON – The home opener on Friday night at the renovated Smith Field was visually gratifying for Buccaneer fans, but the football team suffered an unfortunate night due to several injuries that hindered Covington in a 49-0 loss to New Bremen.

Two key players are out for the season due to injuries a few weeks ago and two more players were out of the lineup due to injuries in the season opener. Plus, three more Buccaneers were injured tonight against New Bremen, but one was able to return to the field. Overall, six two-way Buccaneer starters were out of the game, which put the team into a tough situation against a very good New Bremen team.

Plus, the Buccaneers started the game off in an unfortunate situation as New Bremen intercepted a pass near midfield. The Cardinals then scored on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead.

After the three key Buccaneer players were injured, New Bremen scored on all but one remaining possessions in the first half to take a 35-0 lead at the break.

The Cardinals then started off the second half by scoring on a 75-yard kickoff return to take a 43-0 lead. The rest of the game was a running clock and New Bremen closed out the game with a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Even with three starting offensive lineman out, a running back out, and another player out who plays fullback and tight end, the Buccaneers were able to give themselves a chance to score in the third quarter by moving the ball inside the five. Unfortunately, on a fourth-and-three at the five, the Buccs ended up one yard short of reaching a first-and-goal opportunity.

This was a rough night for Covington against a very talented team, but there were some highlights that the Buccaneers can build on if they remain mentally tough and focus on improvement.

The highlights for the Buccs were the interception by senior Christian Clark that prevented another New Bremen score, the toughness shown by senior Day’Lynn Garrett after suffering an ankle injury, early in the game and the two-for-two pass completions tossed by sophomore quarterback Rider Robbins.

Covington, now 0-2, has to find a way to regroup and prepare to challenge Graham next Friday.
