JANUARY 13, 2018 - ARCANUM
Over the past two seasons the kids who have been blessed to play for Covington head football coach Tyler Cates only know of him as a coach and a teacher.

What the kids may not know is once upon a time Tyler Cates was one heck of an athlete at Arcanum (a rival school of Covington) where he excelled in football and basketball - earning four varsity letters in the two sports.

In basketball Cates earned four varsity letters and helped lead the Trojans to a 17-6 record as a senior.

But it was the sport of football where Cates became an Arcanum legend as he was a four-year starter under his coach and mentor Jason Schondelmyer and over his four-year career the Trojans compiled an amazing 34-9 record.

Despite starting his high school career as a 125-pound freshman in 2002, Cates worked his way into the starting lineup through hard work and unbelievable toughness. That year the Trojans finished 8-2 overall and runner-up at 8-1 in the Cross County Conference with the lone conference loss coming to Covington, 27-10.

In Cates' sophomore season in 2003, Arcanum finished 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the CCC, good for third in the CCC to Anna and league champion Covington.

Cates and the Trojans then finished 8-2 overall for the third straight year in 2004 and finished runner-up in the league to Anna with an 8-1 conference record. That year Cates had a monster game against Covington with 179 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 14-7 Trojan win.

His senior season in 2005 was one for the ages as he helped lead the Trojans to a shared Cross County Conference championship with Anna and Covington as all three teams finished the regular season with identical 9-1 overall records and 8-1 league record. That year Cates set Arcanum's single-season rushing record with 1612 rushing yards and a scored a school record 166 points - records that still stand today.

For his outstanding athletic career, Cates was inducted into the Arcanum Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Arcanum High School. His longtime friend Donnie Eyler presented him into induction in the Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in the school with many family and friends on hand - among those being a large contingent from Covington, including some of his current players.

And those in attendance were rewarded with an inspirational and emotional speech by Cates as he thanked those who had an impact on his life while reflecting on his playing days at Arcanum.

It was never the individual records that meant anything to Cates. It was the bond he developed with his teammates through the ups and downs over his high school career - a fact he communicated during his induction speed.

He talked about the challenges and adversity he faced as an individual athlete and as a part of a team. He talked about the most enjoyable wins and the most devastating losses. He also talked about his love for kids and "why" he chose to teach and coach.

And fortunately for Covington, Tyler Cates chose to coach here.

Congratulations Coach Cates on your induction into the Arcanum Athletic Hall of Fame.
